Reliable and efficient networking: be connected 24/7, and it's gentle on your battery. BeejiveIM uses your existing data plan: no per-message charges. After being out of coverage BeejiveIM automatically reconnects and picks up where you left off.īeejiveIM uses your phone's existing data plan or wifi connection, so you can save money by reducing your text messages. Stay connected after you close the application and be notified when you get a new message through push notifications. Move from 3G, Edge, and wifi connections seamlessly. all at the same time, all on your iPhone or iPod Touch.īeejive's reliable and efficient networking has been tested and proven on multiple platforms. Stay connected to all your instant messaging buddies anywhere you go! BeejiveIM (pronounced \bē-hīv\ IM) keeps you in touch with your friends on AIM®/MobileMe®, MSN®/Windows Live®, Yahoo!®, GoogleTalk®, Facebook, MySpace and Jabber. For now, however, BeejiveIM is definitely well polished and highly usable, if pricey.BeejiveIM. BeejiveIM is already overpriced despite its novelty, and it will be hard to charge more than a few bucks (if that) when other IM apps are there to level the playing field. The developers promise that some of these will be available in future upgrades.Īnd Beejive will need to be busy in the future, because when Apple finally does let third-party apps work in the background, its application's uniqueness will fly out the window. It does lack a few features that you may miss, like emoticons, hyperlinked text, and the ability to send attachments. One cool trick that BeejiveIM implements is the ability to shake your phone to toggle between chats-though don't shake too hard or you'll bounce back and forth. Landscape mode is supported for easier typing, and you can send records of chat sessions via e-mail. Chats use speech bubbles to organize messages, and tapping anywhere in the message window will call up the virtual keyboard for typing out a new message. It can display buddy icons, and it lets you change your buddy icon to an image stored on your phone. You just pay a pretty price for it.īeyond the promise of (sort of) constant connectivity, BeejiveIM also has many of the usual features of IM aggregators, including support for AIM, Jabber, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and more services (though not Facebook IM). Sure, it's not an ideal setup, but it worked well on my tests, and it's the best solution on the market. In addition, the app can send you SMS messages when you get a new message. Those who have set up their iPhones with push e-mail from Apple MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, or Yahoo! Mail services can have e-mails pushed to them when new IMs are sent. It even gives you the option to stay connected for up to 24 hours after you close the application, which means you can receive IMs pretty much anytime you want.īeejive offers a couple of ways to notify you when those messages come in. Meanwhile, Beejive has a novel workaround that involves routing your messages through its own servers, which lets you stay connected to your IM services even when you close out of the BeejiveIM app. Apple is dragging its feet on a fix for this problem. It's hard to replicate the always-on appeal of instant messaging when your chat ends as soon as you close the app to check your e-mail or open some other iPhone software. Perhaps more than any other apps, IM programs are hamstrung by the iPhone's current inability to let third-party software run in the background. The developers, who also offer a version for the BlackBerry, have a clever trick up their sleeve that makes the app stand out from the crowd-but only IM addicts will justify the cost. So it takes guts for Beejive to charge $15.99 for its BeejiveIM instant-messaging app, especially when similar multi-client apps like Palringo are available free. With the market for paid iPhone apps still in flux, it's hard for any developer to justify charging more than a few dollars for anything other than a very specialized product.
